"New study finds interesting ephedra
advertising inconsistencies"
Ephedra makers still continue to maintain that the supplements
are safe when used as directed, despite the recent congressional
hearings debating whether or not to issue an ephedra ban
or to tighten ephedra’s availability. Since the
1994 federal law allows dietary supplement makers to sell
products without testing the safety or efficacy, ephedra
has been able to remain on the market. The high profile
deaths associated to ephedra side effects, as well as
the controversial allowance to sell ephedra on the market
has forced regulators to more closely evaluate the herbal
supplement’s availability to consumers.
Now, one of the first studies to look at e-commerce
and the herbal supplement business has closely looked
at 32 Web sites selling ephedra-containing products
in July 2002. What the study found was that ephedra
was being advertised on Web sites as a beneficial treatment
for hypertension and coronary disease, despite ephedra’s
long standing link to elevated blood pressure, strokes,
and heart attacks, according to a Mayo Clinic Proceedings
article published in August 2003.
