"Ephedra Diet Pills Appearing on the Market Again"
In April of 2005 a US District Court quietly overturned the FDA's ban on ephedra, but only for use in low-dose products. The overturning of the ban, followed years of ephedra diet pill related deaths and lawsuits.
The FDA banned the product in 2003, but a reversal of their decision happened earlier this year. The court had discovered that the FDA could not prove that low dosages of ephedra, 10 milligrams or less, was dangerous.
The FDA's ban on higher dose ephedra products still remains in effect. The overturning of the ban has resulted in a deluge of new diet pills and supplements containing ephedra.
The overturning of the ban has not regulated consumer use of ephedra and many products containing the herb can be used at higher doses fairly easily. The diet products coming on the market also have the bitter orange extract, which also raises the heart rate and blood pressure in healthy adults. Mixing bitter orange and low doses of ephedra could result in some of the same problems ephedra had before being initially banned.
