Latest Ephedra Death Cases Settled
Lawyers have settled the last of the lawsuits arising from a slew of ephedra-related deaths which have been under investigation for the past few years.
This lawsuit concerned the death of a 24-year-old woman from Alabama who died after taking a dietary supplement containing ephedra and caffeine, and engaging in correction officer training exercises.
The lawsuit was filed against Nutraquest, who went bankrupt in 2003 as a result of all of the wrongful death, and personal injury lawsuits filed against them.
The bankruptcy is just now being finalized, and the company plans to settle all those cases for a total of $34.5 million.
One other recent lawsuit against Nutraquest involved a mother who had taken one of their products, and died on an afternoon run as her children watched. There was also a case involving an Army Master Sergeant who ingested a product containing ephedra and died during a basketball match.
Yet another lawsuit against Nutraquest involved the death of a Baltimore Orioles pitcher who died during spring training after taking one of their products.
The link that tied all of these cases together was the complete disregard for the health and safety of its consumers. The suits claim that none of these companies tested or researched their products’ safety adequately.
The plaintiffs’ lawyers also claim that not only were the products not tested, but that at least two of the defendants said they were aware of the many injuries and deaths that resulted from the ingestion of ephedra-containing products.
