Family Sues over Teen’s Ephedrine Death
The family of a 16-year-old who suffered a stroke after taking a supplement containing ephedrine has filed a lawsuit against the store that sold the banned supplements to him.
“Everything started dropping; slow motion. I didn’t know where I was,” said Joseph. “The next morning when I woke up, I lost all movement in the right side of my body. It all unraveled from there.”
“I wanted to be on varsity as a junior,” Joseph said. “To me, that was a big accomplishment. But unfortunately, I never got to be able to accomplish it.”
Placing Blame
Joseph and his parents believe that the stroke happened because of an ingredient in the supplements he was taking called “ma huang.” This substance is also known as ephedrine.
“What else could have caused him to have a stroke at his age?” said Tammany Stern, Joseph’s mother.
The lawsuit against the north Dallas store where Joseph bought the supplement accuses the store of leading Joseph to believe that the “product was safe” and “would provide health benefits … without health risks.”
“It would make me faster; lose weight; get stronger,” Joseph said.
The suit also says the store should not have been selling it at all. The Food and Drug Administration has banned the substance after finding that it raises blood pressure, stresses the circulatory system, and can cause heart attacks, strokes, or death.
Despite the fact that the store had a sign advertising ephedra, the store’s owner, Marc Norsworthy said, “I’m not aware that we were selling products with ephedra that the FDA banned.”
