"Ephedrine Raises Concerns When Combined With Exercise"

Randy Eichner, physician for the University of Oklahoma “Sooners,” recently gave a talk to the American College of Sports Medicine’s 54 th Annual Meeting in New Orleans about the risks involved when combining ephedrine and exercise.

Dr. Eichner’s talk focused on the desire in athletes and soldiers to take ephedrine for added strength and energy, despite the fact that many have died due to the drug’s harmful side effects.

Ephedrine Theories

Dr. Eichner broke the ephedrine effects down to different theories regarding the risks that researchers associate with the drug.

Some researchers believe that the chemical causes temperature to increase traumatically as the body continues to sweat through vigorous exercise.

Ephedrine simply masks the fatigue that the body is sending out as a warning, and if football players and soldiers don’t listen to their bodies they can often suffer from heat stroke.

“The warrior mentality in football is often the final enemy,” explained Dr. Eichner, “The macho drive to push past the pain and win is often what keeps an athlete from taking precautions.”

This warrior mentality is often seen carried through with the U.S. armed forces.

A military physician agrees with Dr. Eichner’s theories and sees the same misuse and misconception of the drug relevant in soldiers.

“If a soldier becomes overheated, the reaction can destroy his ability to regulate body temperature in the future, possibly ending that person’s ability to serve,” he explained.
