Products containing ephedra are derived from ephedra which is taken from an evergreen plant that is found
in Central Asia. Now used in dietary supplements and
sports drinks, ephedra is a controversial stimulant
linked to death, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and
many other adverse
ephedra side effects. There are now 100 reported
deaths from ephedra products and safety reviews in the
U.S. have been ordered to assess the dangers. The FDA
has been unable to regulate ephedra products because
of the 1994 federal law allowing the stimulant to be
exempted from federal regulation due to its classification
as a food.
