Metabolife Danger FAQs
What is Metabolife?
Metabolife is now the nation's leading maker of ephedra
supplements mainly taken as a diet pill. Derived from
the Chinese herb ma huang, Metabolife stimulates the
nervous system and speeds up metabolism. Metabolife
is also used to enhance athletic performance, although
the National Football League, International Olympic
Committee, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association
has banned its use due to the high number of reported
deaths associated to Metabolife and other ephedra-based
products.

huang.
Why has Metabolife remained on the market for so long?
Metabolife is primarily made up of ephedra, which is
classified as a food and cannot be federally regulated.
The FDA is unable to subject Metabolife to the same
strict clinical testing standards as prescription and
most over the counter drugs due to the 1994 federal
law exempting ephedra-based products. Metabolife is
under criminal investigation for lying to the FDA about
possible Metabolife side effects in the past.

Why is there a Metabolife investigation?
The Justice Department opened a criminal
investigation to determine if Metabolife International
lied to the FDA when saying they had not received any
reports of adverse health effects caused by their popular
diet pill Metabolife. Due to Metabolife's classification
as a food, the FDA has been unable to regulate Metabolife
although they have been trying to obtain records from
the company since 1997. The FDA can only regulate Metabolife
if they can prove the products and dangerous, information
they have unable to obtain due to Metabolife's uncooperative
behavior towards them.
